Martlets Win on the Road

The gear was still damp from last night’s battle, but the Martlets were back on the bus, heading to the Quiet Corner of Connecticut for a showdown against the Pomfret Griffins. From the opening puck drop, it was a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest, with both teams trading scoring chances and momentum. The goaltenders on both ends of the ice were lights-out through the first two periods, turning aside every shot to keep the scoreboard locked at 0-0.
As the third period got underway, the Martlets stuck to their structure, trusting their habits and attention to detail. Their patience paid off midway through the frame when Tommy Coccaro ’26 picked up a loose puck just outside the Pomfret blue line. Coccaro broke in alone, made a slick move, and buried a beauty past the netminder to give the Martlets a 1-0 edge with 10 minutes to go.
Pomfret pressed hard down the stretch, pulling their goalie in the final minutes for the extra attacker. But the Martlets held their ground. Quinn Pine ’25 showcased his wheels, winning a race to a loose puck and sliding it into the empty net. Timmy Donohue ’27 added another empty-netter, and Derek Rhodes ’25 capped off the scoring with a laser in the closing seconds.
Between the pipes, Jack Fichthorn ’26 was sensational, stopping all 27 shots he faced—including a handful of highlight-reel saves worthy of an ESPN Top 10 nod. It was a gutsy road win and a testament to the team’s character. The Martlets leave Pomfret with a well-earned shutout and two big points in the books.
